The 3rd Shenzhen (International) Science Film Week, featuring a combination of film and science events, will commence in the city this Saturday, according to a media conference held by the organizing committee yesterday afternoon.

The weeklong science film week, running from Saturday to Sept. 21, will feature an array of activities promoting scientific knowledge through films, according to the organizing committee.

Apart from a mobile phone short film competition, an awards ceremony, a summit forum on science films, the third Handle Climate Change Film Festival (HCCFF2018) and a matchmaking session for science film projects, over 300 free movie screenings will be organized at cinemas and schools for residents and students.

According to Zhang Zhiping, vice president of the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology, HCCFF2018, a film festival highlighting global climate change, will be held from Monday to Sept. 21.

The festival has received 1,113 films produced by filmmakers from 90 countries, and the winning films will be screened at “China’s Corner” during the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Bonn in December.

Another highlight of the science film week is the mobile phone short film competition, which is aimed at encouraging local teenagers in Shenzhen to make self-produced scientific films with their mobile phones. The organizing committee hopes to guide teenagers in exploring and producing short videos that promote scientific knowledge, said Zhang.

The competition was launched in mid-July and has received 322 entries. A panel of seven judges is currently making the final decisions. The results of the competition will be announced Saturday night.
