Spending by people above the age of 50 accounted for about 24 percent of Shenzhen’s total expenditure during the National Day holiday, statistics from a service platform showed.

Spending during the holiday increased by 38 percent over the pre-festival period. Hotpot, Guangdong cuisine and barbecue ranked as the top three favorite kinds of food.

KTV clubs, ice-skating rinks and other sports venues also saw 50 to 70 percent increases in consumption.

Tourists from outside the city contributed 18 percent of the spending. Short tours to Guangzhou, Dongguan and Huizhou have become the favorite destinations for Shenzhen travelers.

Statistics also showed milk tea shops are not just popular among young people. Consumption at milk tea shops by people over 50 rose by 59 percent during the holiday compared to the pre-holiday period.
