Conducted by its artistic director Lin Daye, the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra (SZSO) will bring audiences on a journey along the Silk Road today and tomorrow.

Titled “Chasing Dreams on the Silk Road,” the multimedia symphony was created by five Chinese composers consigned by Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SCM). Zhou Xianglin, Ye Guohui, Zhang Xuru, Zhao Guang and Yin Mingwu each contributed a movement to the work, which debuted in September 2016 at the Xi’an Silk Road International Art Festival.

The piece, peppered with elements from Chinese, Midwest and South Asian folk music, presents an exotic journey through the land and maritime silk roads in the form of classical music. Zhou, who composed the prelude, borrows from “Da Ya,” a famous Chinese piece performed on guqin (an ancient plucked seven-string instrument of the zither family). Ye was inspired by the landscape and customs of the singing and dance-loving folks from the prairies in Midwest Asia, while audiences will hear a sound similar to the sitar in Zhao’s movement called “Fantasy.” The original work produced by SCM president Lin Zaiyong also combines videos accompanying the music, but Shenzhen audiences will only enjoy the piece in concert this time.
