Exhibition brings future visions to reality| Until Jan. 6

To mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the OCT Art & Design Gallery, “Land[E]scape,” an exhibition featuring 61 sets of creative projects by Studio Makkink & Bey, is being held at the design-themed gallery in Nanshan District.

According to designer Jurgen Bey, his studio intends to demonstrate how a single product or design thinking can redefine a landscape through this complex exhibition. Led by Bey and architect Rianne Makkink, the studio aims to explore macro-sized impacts with micro-level innovation.

Bey explained the portmanteau “Land[E]scape” by saying that visitors are invited to “escape” from the ordinary everyday reality, get lost in the presented “landscape” and take their new perspectives back to their realities.
“Landscapes are ever-evolving carriers of information of both natural and cultural sorts. Any change within them, however small it might be, affects the landscape as a whole. On the other hand, any change on the scale of a landscape affects all it accommodates. If seen from the context of design, this means that one single product can progress into a project of a larger scale, motivating its own setting through generating its own landscape. Yet, a project on the scale of urban planning can equally produce a series of products related to and derived from their original context,” said Bey.
“This exhibition is interdisciplinary and experimental, showing a futuristic lifestyle for us. You may not understand some objects at first sight but slowly you can rediscover the landscapes around you and integrate new ideas into your daily routines,” said Feng Feng, academic director of the exhibition.
