Representatives with the city’s urban management bureau and Futian District’s culture and sports bureau, urban management bureau, and environmental protection and water affairs bureau met with six deputies to the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress on Thursday to answer questions concerning the construction and planning of the city’s public parks, sznews.com reported.

Before the meeting, the deputies conducted field visits to the city’s parks and solicited opinions from the public. In view of the interior construction of the parks, a deputy named Yang Qin pointed out that there are many problems in the city’s parks, such as too few public toilets, smelly toilets and unsanitary environments.

The representative with Futian District’s urban management bureau responded that there were certain restrictions on the building area of the parks when they were planned, so the number and size of public toilets in the parks were limited.

However, during the process of park construction and future reconstruction, the number of public toilets and the number of squat toilets for men and women will be arranged according to the actual situation. Moreover, there will be nursing rooms and new designs will be adopted to control unpleasant odors, said the representative.

According to deputy Long Yufeng, the current public parks lack cultural themes. Also, the sports venues are not comprehensive and the activity venues for children and the elderly are inadequate.

In response, the representative with Futian District’s culture and sports bureau said that more cultural and sports elements would be integrated to create parks with distinct characteristics.

For instance, Xiangmi Park has already been equipped with a standard soccer field, basketball court, tennis court and other sports facilities. Next, more parks will focus on the construction of cultural, sports and other facilities. A diverse array of activity venues will also be planned for various groups of people.

Other deputies raised questions on the maintenance of park facilities and the use of construction materials. Representatives with the urban management bureaus of the city and Futian District said the main reason for the slow renovation of old facilities in parks is still insufficient funds. The focus of the current work is to upgrade the old parks in stages.

Meanwhile, the authorities will analyze the construction standards and adopt general and widely used materials to ensure the supply for replacing old facilities.
