Shenzhen is one step closer to becoming a city with 1,000 parks, as the planning for the city’s first country sports park in Dapeng New Area has been finished and the park will open to the public in two years, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

A week ago, Shenzhen officially won the title of National Forest City after meeting the 40 requirements for the appellation, becoming one of the nine National Forest Cities in Guangdong Province.

Having succeeded in the mission of becoming a National Forest City, Shenzhen is also planning to do its utmost to partake in the construction of a forest city cluster in the Pearl River Delta.

Shenzhen will continue to promote the quality of forests by carrying out the ecological restoration of existing forests and the cultivation of natural urban forests.

Currently, the city’s forest coverage is 40.68 percent and the green coverage rate of the urban area reaches 45.1 percent.

Additionally, Shenzhen will further improve the ecological water grid system, promote the construction of wetland parks and build natural riparian areas.

The city will also strive to develop into a world-famous flower city with high-quality parks. By the end of 2020, the total number of parks in the city will exceed 1,000.

The city now has a total of 942 parks and a three-level park system, consisting of country parks, urban parks and community parks, has taken shape. All residents live within 500 meters, 2 kilometers and 5 kilometers of community parks, urban parks and countryside parks, respectively.

In order to build itself into a world-famous flower city, Shenzhen is also vigorously promoting the construction of flower landscapes. The city has decorated 23 boulevards, 79 blocks, 151 gardens and 120 key urban areas with flowers.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen has been actively developing a vertical greening system using the new viaducts and pedestrian overpasses and adding more than 300,000 square meters of vertical greening annually over the past three years.

Next, Shenzhen aims to play a pivotal role in cultivating a forest city cluster and boosting the coordinated development of Pearl River Delta cities.
