The Hong Kong-Shenzhen Charitable Fund Medical Imaging Center of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital (HKU-SZH) commenced full-service operation Saturday when a magnetic resonance imaging scanner donated by Hong Kong businessman Law Sau-fai was officially put into operation.

The hospital also announced the establishment of the HK-SZ Charitable Fund at the opening ceremony of the medical imaging center held Saturday.

HKU-SZH will set up an account to promote medical charity and public welfare by mobilizing more social forces.

“Medical service is an undertaking for public welfare. In addition to support from the government and medical institutions, it also needs support from people from all walks of life,” said Lo Chung-Mau, head of HKU-SZH. “Charitable donation is a way to showcase the mutual trust between doctors and patients, as well as the social responsibility of institutional groups and individuals.”

Law said he hopes for more opportunities to unite people in support of the country’s medical development and benefit the public. Law, a renowned businessman, has done extensive charitable work in Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and other developing countries in Asia.

In 2013, HKU-SZH hospital set up an emergency fund for patients. It auctioned off gifts the hospital staff had received and deposited the proceeds into the fund’s account. According to HKU-SZH, the emergency fund will be incorporated into the charitable fund. Meanwhile, the hospital will set up a third-party supervision committee to ensure that the fund is used fairly and properly.
