China design and public art exhibition opens

The Third China Design Exhibition & Public Art Thematic Exhibition is being held at the Shenzhen Museum of Contemporary Art and Urban Planning beside the Civic Center in Futian District and will last until March, the organizers announced at the exhibition’s academic committee’s first meeting Nov.6.

With the theme of “New Era, New Life,” the exhibition, organized by China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Guangdong Provincial Government and the Shenzhen Municipal Government, will display design and public art case studies made over the past three years and discuss how Chinese design and public art can propel social development and improve people’s lives.

According to Hang Jian and Wang Dawei, who organized 12 curators for the exhibition, the exhibition will focus on problem-solving. In the design part, about 100-120 case studies will showcase the beauty of Chinese design, traditional craft innovations, new materials, new technologies, rural constructions, artificial intelligence and environmental protection. In the public art section, about 30-50 case studies will explore on art in city spaces, urbanization, community constructions, rural cultural rejuvenation, old village protection and rural township designs.

The 12 curators are mainly professors or department directors from top Chinese fine arts academies, domestic art museum directors and independent architects.

Launched in 2012 with the former name “the China Design Exhibition,” the well-established event aims to display the overall development of China’s design, build a national and comprehensive research platform and explore the value of design in serving the country’s economic, social and cultural development.
