Themed “Design for Sustainability,” the 2019 Shenzhen Design Week will be held between April 19 and 30, and the second Shenzhen Global Design Award is now open for registration and applications until March 20, according to a press conference held at the Civic Center yesterday.

The main venues of this year’s design week include the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition and the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center in Futian District.

As a key cultural event in the city, Shenzhen Design Week is no longer a simple design activity with exhibitions and exchanges, but emphasizes the correlation between design and industry, as well as design and society, said the organizer.

One of the highlights of this year’s design week is the Shenzhen Design Expo, which is being held for the first time and will provide a platform for design-related products to be displayed and traded.

Organized to recognize and reward designers with creativity, vision, foresight and influence, the Shenzhen Global Design Award has also made innovations this year. It has solicited works in five design categories, including visual communication, industrial products, architectural design, interior design and fashion design.

Moreover, the total amount in cash prizes is 10 million yuan (US$1.45 million) this year. Each category will have one gold, three silver, five bronze and 10 honorable mention award winners.

The prize for the gold, silver and bronze awards is 500,000 yuan, 300,000 yuan, and 100,000 yuan, respectively. Also, the organizer has set up a special award for sustainable development, the winner of which will take home 500,000 yuan.

Design works can also enter the competition by nomination this year, according to the organizer. A maximum of 20 world-renowned architects, designers, professional magazines or publication editors and organizations are invited to nominate projects that can be entered directly in the final round of selection.

Last year, the design week introduced the concept of guest of honor country, and Italy became the first guest of honor country of Shenzhen Design Week. At present, the organizing committee is endeavoring to make London the guest of honor city this year.

Additionally, those who have design-related professional backgrounds or are engaged in the design industry are welcome to apply to participate in the sideline activities of the design week.
