Shenzhen's progress over the decades is inseparable from the contributions made by talents, and deputies to the Seventh Session of the Sixth Shenzhen Municipal People’s Congress (MPC) called for attention to be paid to human resources to boost the city’s comprehensive competitiveness in the new era at a panel discussion held Saturday.

The government work report delivered at the opening ceremony of the MPC session Friday morning listed the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area as one of the key projects for the city to promote in 2019.

Wang Hongxin, a lawmaker, said that talent is the key element propelling the area’s development, since it has always been a source of productive forces. The government should take full advantage of the area’s strategy as well as its special location to attract talents not only from the mainland but also from Hong Kong and Macao, Wang said.

Li Yongxia, a deputy from Taiwan, said she hoped that the government would issue policies to welcome more young entrepreneurs from Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao to do business in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Deputies from the fashion industry also demonstrated their demand for talents. Shen Yongfang, a deputy and chairman of the Shenzhen Garment Industry Association, said that many talents in the Shenzhen fashion circle are moving to other cities like Shanghai. “I am concerned about this. Cities like Shanghai have issued many preferential policies to support talents and we should figure out solutions to keep talents in order to have a sustainable future,” said Shen.
