Meaning:

Literally meaning to “stand guard,” this term is used by Chinese stock investors to refer to the situation where one person buys a stock when the price is high, and is forced to hold the shares longer than their plan because the price has fallen. Not wanting to lose money on their investment, the investors “keep guard” of their stock shares instead of selling or buying more. In recent years, the term has also been used on property investors who buy a property when the price is at the peak.

Example:

A: 你去年买的股票赚钱了吗?

Nǐ qùnián mǎi de gǔpiào zhuànqián le ma?

Have you made money from the stocks you bought last year?

B: 没有,还在站岗。

Méiyǒu,hái zài zhàngǎng。

Not yet, I bought at the peak and am still holding them.
