Two cultural events, a concert and a Cantonese opera performance, will be held next week to mark Shenzhen’s 40th anniversary, sources from Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra said Thursday.

The concert, jointly organized by Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra and Shenzhen Opera and Dance Drama Theater, will be held at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

For the first half of the concert, typical pieces of original local music that reflect the different time periods of Shenzhen will be performed. The second half of the concert will present the audience with classical Western music.

The Classic Cantonese Opera and Songs Evening Party, organized by Shenzhen Cantonese Opera Troupe, will be held at Shenzhen Auditorium on Wednesday. The organizer has invited well-known Cantonese opera artists from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao to give performances.

The evening party, to unfold over four episodes, comprises a dozen selections from classic Cantonese operas and Cantonese songs.

On March 5, 1979, the Central Government approved changing Bao’an County into Shenzhen City under the dual leadership of Guangdong Province and Huiyang. In November 1979, the Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee decided to upgrade Shenzhen into a prefecture-level city.
