Although Wangjiazhuang River may be one of the less familiar to the public among the 66 rivers in Bao’an District, it has been known as a heavily polluted river to the residents of Shiyanxincun housing complex in Shiyan Subdistrict.

Nowadays, the river has cast off its label as a “black and odorous” river and gradually become integrated into the lives of the local residents, the Bao’an Daily reported.

The river, a tributary on the left bank of Tianzhen River, originates from the south side of Zhoushi Road in Shiyan Subdistrict. It flows through Shiyanxincun housing complex and merges with Tianzhen River near Xinyi Community.

The river runs 620 meters and its basin area covers 1.25 square kilometers. The river’s open channels and culverts are interlaced, and the overall length of the open channels is 350 meters and that of the culverts is 280 meters.

Prior to pollution treatment, 10 sewage outlets were found along the river where untreated sewage was discharged.

The city’s water engineering construction management center and Bao’an District’s water affairs bureau subsequently launched separate projects to tackle the pollution problem. New sewage interception pipes extending 630 meters were built along the river, and nine sewage outlets were regulated, according to the Daily.

The sewage interception project was completed Nov. 30, 2018, after which the sewage has gone to the sewage interception system of Tianzhen River and eventually the Gongming Sewage Treatment Plant. Meanwhile, 1,947 cubic meters of silt was removed from Wangjiazhuang River.

In terms with the water supply project, 906 meters of new water supply pipelines were built, with the water supply point located at the starting point of one of the open channels of the river and the water supply coming from the wetland constructed on Shiyan River.

The water supply of Wangjiazhuang River achieved sustainability after the water supply project was completed Dec. 9, 2018.
