Shenzhen was among the top performers in terms of order number as well as parcel amount both inside and outside of the city during the June 18 shopping festival, or mid-year sale, one of China’s biggest shopping sprees beside Double 11, the Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.

The shopping festival ended Wednesday.

According to data released by JD.com, which initiated the mid-year sale around June 18 as its anniversary celebration, Shenzheners purchased more than seven items on average during the shopping festival, ranking first in Guangdong Province.

People born in the 1980s and 1990s contributed 81 percent of the sales volume, becoming the main consumers in the city, based on the list published by Tmall.

Together with Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou and Hangzhou, Shenzhen was also among the top five cities in the country in terms of sales volume.

In terms of categories, Shenzhen ranked third in female clothes while the city was also among the top in the digital, cosmetics and food fields, according to the Tmall report.

High-quality smart products from big brands were favored by consumers during this year’s mid-year sale. Among the top 20 best-selling mobile phones, eight were priced over 2,999 yuan (US$437), according to JD.com.

Additionally, cleaning robots, window-cleaning machines and other cleaning products saw a big improvement in sales with a year-on-year growth rate of over 200 percent. Home dishwashers were also a popular product, with a sales volume rising more than 500 percent from a year earlier.

Over 110 brands on Tmall achieved a turnover exceeding 100 million yuan, more than 60 percent of which were Chinese brands, such as Huawei, Midea and Xiaomi.

From June 1 to Tuesday, total sales volume through JD.com this year reached 201.5 billion yuan. The number of orders on Suning.com was up 133 percent compared to last year.
