With a population of about 640,000, Macao is a relatively small market for books in Asia, but with the benefit of two strong languages, Chinese and Portuguese, it presents interesting possibilities for publishers both at home and abroad.

This week, more than 20 countries and regions are participating in the Macao International Book Fair, which is about more than just books. Entry is free.

Chef Philippe Groult

Covering an area of 3,000 square meters, the exhibition hall at The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel is divided into six exhibition areas. The Exhibition Area of Food and Wine Books is showcasing the award-winning books from the 24th Gourmand World Cookbook Awards as well as other excellent food and wine books published around the world. The Exhibition Area of Chinese Publications is mainly presenting lifestyle books published in Chinese.

The Chef’s Kitchen features live cooking demonstrations by Chinese and foreign master chefs, allowing visitors to learn, watch and taste delicacies prepared by master chefs.

Food critic Chua Lam

The International Exhibition Area is mainly displaying overseas food and wine publications by publishers from Portuguese-speaking countries and world-famous cookbook publishers. The Reading Experience Area features gastronomy books and related cultural products. Seminars and exchange sessions will be held in the Salon Area.

The book fair is one of the highlights of the Second Encounter in Macao — Arts and Cultural Festival Between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries. It is dedicated to the theme, “A Taste of Macao,” and features a variety of activities, including book launches and writers’ dialogues.
