Dog-keeping model to be promoted

A management model for civilized dog keeping, which is being implemented at Dingtaifenghua, a residential community in Nanshan District, will be spread to over 3,000 residential estates across the city, according to the Shenzhen Municipal Urban Administration and Law Enforcement Bureau.

The move was jointly initiated by the urban administration and law enforcement bureau and the Shenzhen Municipal Housing and Construction Bureau, aiming to address dog-keeping issues in residential compounds in order to improve the city’s meticulous management level and form a Shenzhen model for other cities.

The model includes 10 steps, namely signing a civilized dog-keeping agreement, establishing a volunteer team, building a supervision team, holding free medical consultations for dogs every half a year, reserving an area for residents to walk their dogs, creating a communication group for dog owners, building a dog service center, setting up a platform to publish uncivilized dog-keeping behaviors, establishing a scheme to connect the property management office with the law enforcement department and organizing annual meetings to discuss civilized dog keeping.

The whole project is divided into three stages. The first stage is from September to October. Each subdistrict is required to select at least two residential estates as pilot units for implementing the model.

Relevant departments will check on the work on the second stage in November and the experience will be summarized in December during the final stage.

Dingtaifenghua has been implementing this model since 2014, under which the number of complaints over dog-keeping related issues has dropped.

A resident surnamed Gu, who has been living in the community for more than 10 years, said that she is satisfied with the community’s efforts at building a sound dog-keeping environment.

“The community’s public area is clean and people are living harmoniously with dogs,” said Gu.
