Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) witnessed as 18 fresh new faces from eight countries started their campus life yesterday.

The students from Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, South Korea, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Germany and the U.S. passed strict reviews and written tests before joining the 2,219 new students pursuing graduate and doctoral studies.

This number is more than double that in 2018, according to data released at the university’s opening ceremony yesterday.

At the opening ceremony, Lyly Cheap from Cambodia said that she was thrilled with the modern facilities at the university and honored to be studying at SUSTech, a new home that brings her new opportunities.

Fabien Anoop Sonpar from Germany has always been interested in science. He said he aims to study renewable energy in the future.

“SUSTech and Shenzhen, a city of innovation, will help me realize my dream,” said Sonpar.

Rou Yun Teo from Malaysia learned about SUSTech at the Malaysian National Education Exhibition.

“SUSTech is a high-level science and engineering university with a core of research, innovation and entrepreneurship. I did not hesitate to choose SUSTech, because of its strong research background,” said Rou.

In 2019, SUSTech has enrolled 1,062 students for undergraduate studies from 22 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions. The average NCEE (National College Entrance Examination) result from students in 14 provinces reached the top 1.5 percent. It is the first year that the university has recruited students to study for doctoral degrees. A total of 491 students will start their doctoral programs.
