THE mainland section of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link will be covered by 5G service before next Spring Festival, according to a release by Guangzhou Railway Group Corp. on Tuesday.

China Mobile Guangdong Co. Ltd. will set aside a special fund of 150 million yuan (US$21 million) to build more than 300 5G signal launch points along the rail. The installation of the signal points will enable the peak download speed to reach 1Gbps and make the high-speed rail the first in the world covered by 5G service.

With the service, passengers will be able to enjoy smooth telecommunication services, watch movies and surf the Internet on the trains running at 350 kilometers per hour.

At train stations, they can enjoy VR, AR, cloud games and 8K videos via the 5G service.

GZ-SZ-HK Express Rail Link runs 141 kilometers, linking Guangzhou, Dongguan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. An important rail in the Greater Bay Area, it has seven stations, including three in Shenzhen. The mainland section runs 116 kilometers and the Hong Kong section runs 26 kilometers.

At present, 191 pairs of trains run on the rail each day, carrying 229,000 passengers, making it one of the busiest rail lines in China.
