New convention and exhibition center completed

Shenzhen's new convention and exhibition center, which is located in Bao'an District, was completed Saturday, the Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.

Shenzhen Party chief Wang Weizhong and Mayor Chen Rugui attended the completion ceremony.

The Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center, which will be the world's largest upon completion of the second phase project, is said to be the largest single building ever built in Shenzhen.

It is also the first construction project in the world to integrate the simultaneous development of large-scale buildings, rail transit, water conservancy and municipal engineering projects.

The new exhibition center boasts more than 1.6 million square meters of floor space. Phase I covers over 1.21 million square meters of land with 400,000 square meters of indoor space.

The fishbone-shaped center features a 1.7-kilometer corridor in the middle connecting 19 symmetrically arranged exhibition halls and two main registration lobbies. Eighteen of the 19 halls are standard-sized, covering 20,000 square meters each, while one is an extra-large exhibition hall at 50,000 square meters.

A ceremony is held on Saturday to mark the completion of the Shenzhen World Exhibition and Convention Center. 

Each exhibition hall can be used independently or combined flexibly according to demand.

Phase II project will see 100,000 sqm of exhibition halls being built.

The supporting facilities of the new exhibition center will cover 642,000 square meters of space for conferences, offices, catering and warehousing, with 1.54 million square meters of commercial space and 19 four-star or above hotels.

According to Liu Zhida, deputy secretary-general of the city government, the scale of the new convention and exhibition center is unprecedented in the city's history.

“The project is also using the largest amount of steel for a steel structure and the largest amount of mechanical equipment at onetime in the field of building construction worldwide,” Liu was quoted as saying.

Liu said the new exhibition center will better serve the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and become a first-class international convention and exhibition venue.
