Shenzhen traffic police have increased the number of car reservations to the Meisha area by 20,000 to 50,0000 a day during the National Day holiday.

Among the 50,000 reservations, 40,000 will be given out to individual applicants and 10,000 will be given to business applicants in the area, according to a police release Saturday.

In a move to reduce congestion, the Shenzhen police started to impose the reservation mechanism for vehicles traveling to the city’s eastern tourism areas, including the Meisha and Dapeng areas, between May 1 and Oct. 7 this year. The measures have improved the traffic situation in the two areas.

In June, police introduced tidal lanes, effectively ameliorating the traffic situation in the Meisha area caused by the large number of vehicles leaving the city during holidays. The number of reservations for vehicles traveling to Dapeng, which is 30,000 a day, remains unchanged.

Drivers to those areas can make a reservation through the police’s WeChat account, official website or the iShenzhen (i深圳) app. If they enter the areas without a reservation, they will be fined 300 yuan (US$42) and receive three penalty points.
