A survey revealed that Shenzhen and Guangzhou, two core cities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), are gaining recognition among international talents and Shenzhen has become a destination for overseas talents starting up businesses.

According to the YouGov survey commissioned by HSBC and released Monday, 56 percent of the international talents thought their quality of life had improved after moving to Shenzhen or Guangzhou, 9 percent higher than the national average. Specifically, 53 percent thought their sense of achievement had improved, higher than the national average of 46 percent.

Fifty-seven percent of respondents thought Shenzhen provided better job opportunities than Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, which is higher than the national average.

More than 20 percent of the respondents surveyed in Shenzhen wanted to be self-employed by setting up a business, the highest among all the cities covered by the survey.

Talents with diverse backgrounds and international vision are integral elements of the Greater Bay Area as it becomes a world-class innovative economy, according to Rannie Lee, head of Pearl River Delta retail banking and wealth management of HSBC. The survey showed Guangzhou’s living environment and Shenzhen’s entrepreneurial atmosphere have become unique advantages in attracting global talents to the Greater Bay Area.

“With the implementation of more and more incentives to attract talents, the vision to turn the GBA into a new driver for the global economy will attract more and more talents to contribute to the construction and development of the GBA in the future,” Lee said.

The survey, which was conducted over 12 years among global immigrants, is a large-scale survey. This year’s survey covered 18,000 people in 160 countries and regions.
