When it comes to developing ocean engineering equipment, Bai Yong, an academician at Norges Tekniske Vitenskapsakademi (NTVA), thinks long-term innovation is the key and Shenzhen is fully equipped for it.

“Ocean engineering requires high technology and long-term innovation. Developing a good product takes five to 20 years. I believe Shenzhen is fully capable of doing this. First of all, Shenzheners are very hardworking, so given the same period of time, they’re more effective (compared with other places),” said Bai at the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center on Wednesday during the 2019 China Marine Economy Expo.

“Besides, Shenzhen is a place that attracts talents and many high-tech people, and people with rich experience are willing to come (here). So innovation is a very important element for Shenzhen,” said Bai.

Bai said that the development of high-end ocean engineering equipment in Shenzhen should focus on equipment such as the drilling platforms of offshore oil, subsea production systems and petroleum pipelines. However, one bottleneck for Shenzhen might be its lack of land and insufficiency of coastline. “To develop these high-end ocean engineering equipments we need to go to remote areas in Shenzhen and Huizhou,” he said.

According to Bai, Shenzhen has advantages in the development of the emerging marine industry, and this year’s marine economy expo has shown its rapid development in this area.
