A total of 80,000 old Mobikes owned by delivery platform Meituan will be replaced in Shenzhen under the supervision of relevant government departments.

The first batch of new Mobikes hit local roads last week, marking the third time that old Mobikes have been replaced in Shenzhen since the shared bikes entered the local market three years ago.

The replacement will be restricted to within the quota that has been approved by the authority, according to Cai Junlian, the Shenzhen-Dongguan area manager of Meituan Bicycle. “The total number of Mobikes in Shenzhen will not increase,” Cai said.

During the replacement process, the shared bike operator will inform the authorities of the progress in a timely manner and accept the supervision of the authorities and the society, according to the manager.

It has been reported that the replacement is the fifth generation of Mobike upgrades. In terms of style, the new bikes maintain the simple and smooth design of Mobikes, but the main color of the bike’s body is now yellow. The braking system has also been upgraded.

The distance between the bars on the basket has been reduced, which will effectively prevent the rider’s belongings from falling out, according to a sznews.com report.

At present, all models of Mobikes allow the riders to unlock the bikes by using the Meituan app or the original Mobike mobile account. All riders are exempted from paying deposits, and the balances and monthly cards in the original Mobike accounts will remain valid.
