Egg and pork prices in Shenzhen have shown signs of sliding. Compared with October, the wholesale and retail prices of eggs dropped by more than 20 percent, and the price of pork fell by more than 20 percent, the Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

In Haijixing market, Longgang District, the biggest agricultural product wholesale market in Shenzhen, an egg wholesaler told the Daily that the current wholesale price of eggs is between 9.2 yuan and 12.8 yuan (US$1.3-1.8) per kilogram in comparison with 14.2 yuan per kilogram earlier this month.

“The wholesale price of eggs has indeed been reduced compared with 20 days ago, but the prices are not very stable and have been fluctuating,” the egg wholesaler said.

In Futian Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, the wholesale price of eggs in the market dropped from 6.3 yuan per 500 grams in middle and late October to 4.6 yuan per 500 grams at present, a drop of about 26.98 percent, said the Daily.

Egg prices in Carrefour and other supermarkets also fell to a certain extent. On Tuesday, the price of white-shell eggs was 12 yuan per kilogram and that of brownish-shell eggs was 13.5 yuan per kilogram. Last month, the prices of these two kinds of eggs were 15.6 yuan and 17 yuan per kilogram, respectively.

Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs showed that as of 2 p.m. Monday, the price of eggs in national produce wholesale markets was 9.89 yuan per kilogram, 3.2 percent and 20.69 percent lower than that of Nov. 22 and the beginning of November, respectively.

The fall in egg prices is related to a decline in pork prices, according to a staffer with Haijixing. Affected by factors such as the restocking of hog herds and the relaxation of meat imports, the supply of pork has increased and pork prices have come down recently.

According to the data from Futian Agricultural Products Wholesale Market, the wholesale price of pork on the market has dropped from 29.3 yuan per 500 grams in early November to 23 yuan per 500 grams, down 21.5 percent. Daily supply of pork has picked up by 20 percent.
