The Shenzhen Municipal Planning and Natural Resources Bureau announced recently that the Longgang River wetland and the Yanluo wetland will be listed as municipal wetland parks.

The Longgang River wetland is located on the left bank of the Longgang River and the upper estuary of Dingshan River in Longgang District, covering an area of 26.3 hectares.

The overall layout of the park is divided into three areas including a nine-hectare natural wetland, a mountain and forest-viewing area and a 78,000-hectare artificial wetland.

The wetland park is also expected to further purify the tailwater from the Hengling sewage treatment plant in the lower reaches of the Longgang River with its green plants and sandy soil. The purified water will be discharged into the Longgang River.

The crescent-shaped Yanluo wetland covers an area of 6.45 hectares. It is situated in Yanluo Subdistrict, Bao’an District, north of the Songgang water purification plant and the upper part of the Yangyong bridge sluice.

The wetland will integrate the functions of water purification and recreation after being turned into a park.

Known as the “kidney of the Earth,” wetlands are one of the Earth’s three major ecological systems apart from forests and oceans. Shenzhen had a total of 10 wetland parks as of Oct. 30.
