A total of 34 creative projects from home and abroad entered the finals of the 2019 Championship for Innovative Design and had a final showdown at the Shenzhen Talent Park yesterday.

Since its launch this September, the design competition has attracted college students from 66 top universities at home and abroad, including Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University, and collected 2,457 original design works.

At the finals, the jury scored the 34 design works, including 16 from the cultural and creative product design category and 18 from the household product design category, based on three criteria, namely innovation, aesthetics and practicality.

A nasal device designed by Hu Haiyang, a student from South China University of Technology, won the special prize. Hu was awarded design training courses worth 8,999 yuan (US$1,288).

Three contestants won first prizes, six won second prizes and 23 won third prizes. The award for the design that is most likely to be transformed into a product went to a smart and easily operated Bluetooth stereo.

Outstanding works in the competition will be recommended to compete for the creativity award in “China Good Design,” according to the organizers.

The competition is a cooperative partner of the international design competition “China Good Design,” and aims to build a platform to match shortlisted works with manufacturers to help turn ideas and prototypes into commercial products.

This was the fourth edition of the competition since its inception. The competition has collected a total of 5,177 works and established partnerships with 70 universities over the past four years.
