Drivers can now process 18 varieties of traffic violations through a new video-call system that went online Wednesday.

Through the streamlined system, police officers can complete driving violations-related investigations via a video call with drivers. After penalties are determined in-call, violators can pay their fine via the system.

The 18 traffic violations include the illegal use of motorist lanes, driving e-bikes that fail to meet national standards, failing to purchase compulsory third-party insurance, driving without carrying a driver’s license, driving under the influence of alcohol, overloading and driving with an invalid license.

Some vehicle- and driver’s license-related procedures were also moved online from the traffic police’s physical service counters.

After paying fines, for example, drivers can apply to get their license back from police through mail delivery. The system can also generate an electronic slip with which drivers can retrieve their car from the impound lot.

To use the video service, drivers must register as a user on the Shenzhen police WeChat account (ID: szjjwx) or app by preparing related documents like ID, license plate information and driver’s license for verification. Registered users can find the video-call service on the “Traffic Violation Handling” interface.

The video-call service is now offered during work hours from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Service hours may be extended to nighttimes and weekends. More services will also be brought online through the video-call system.
