Shenzhen's senior high schools this year cannot directly enroll “excellent-rated” students from their junior year, according to a notice on the 2020 high school entrance exam released recently by the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau.

Excellent students in the past have had the chance to be directly admitted to their school’s senior year without taking the high school entrance exam.

The city has been reducing the number of senior high school places reserved for such students since 2018. This year, the city will completely do away with the practice, according to the education bureau.

At the same time, the bureau allows several high schools to conduct independent admission exams. However, the number of students selected from the exam should not surpass 10 percent of the school’s annual enrollment plan.

High schools’ enrollment for sports and arts students will also be included in the schools’ independent admission exam, according to the notice.

Additionally, the city will continue piloting independent admission at secondary vocational schools.

This year’s senior high school enrollment work will be conducted online as usual and in four different batches.

Some key secondary vocational schools will be added to the first batch of schools in this year’s enrollment system to show support to vocational education.

All students planning to take this year’s high school entrance examination should make a health report through “深i您” platform 14 days before the test date.

Otherwise, they will not be given a ticket to attend the exam.

The education bureau also reminds students returning to Shenzhen from other provinces and especially those coming from overseas (Hong Kong and Macao included) and domestic places with a high risk of the COVID-19 epidemic to take notice of the city’s prevention and control requirements and allow enough time to successfully take the exam.

The high school entrance exam will be held July 20 and 21, and enrollment work will begin Aug. 5.
