New museum collecting items from public

Huaqiangbei Museum, a new museum in Futian District established to record and protect the unique culture of the electronics market and a maker’s paradise, is asking for items from the public.

Known worldwide as the No. 1 electronics market in China, Huaqiangbei grew from a street of small electronics processing and trade outlets into an Aladdin’s cave of components, gadgets and fashion.
Covering 3,000 square meters, the museum, located on the fifth floor of Guangbo Xiandai Zhichuang Building (广博现代之窗大厦) near the Huaqiang North Metro Station, will use cool sounds, lights and electronic technologies to present the 40-year history of Huaqiangbei.
Contributed items should have scientific, technological and educational values and reflect collective memories of the area along with the social and economic development, or are items that are on the verge of obsolescence. Suitable items include electronic products made in Huaqiangbei from the 1970s to now; latest products or concept products from blue-chip companies in Huaqiangbei; photos, recordings and videos; government documents, certificates, badges, letters, drafts, leaflets, newspapers, books, magazines and posters; literary and art works; social and economic data in the past 40 years; personal odds such as payment bills, phone cards, diaries and uniforms; and goods used by important figures who visited Huaqiangbei.
The museum accepts items via donations, loans or purchase. For donations, each donor will receive a certificate issued by the museum and be credited in the museum’s collection catalogue and website. For those selling items to the museum, their items will be appraised and evaluated by experts before purchase. Individuals or organizations can also lend their items to the museum while keeping their ownership.
