The city authority recently launched a campaign to crack down on illegal road excavation, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

Citizens reported that road projects have made their travels difficult. Some construction units ignore construction rules in order to complete projects on time. For example, they illegally occupy roads and repeatedly dig into roads.

In order to address the concern, the municipal traffic authority launched a 10-day campaign that ended Sunday. A total of 58 cases were handled, 31 of which are related to illegal occupation of roads which also caused damage of infrastructure.

Under relevant regulations, construction units should post project information and a road excavation permit on sites. Project information should be in line with real situations at construction points.

Construction fences and safety warning signs should also be set up. After projects are completed, construction units should clean up the area, said the authority.

Citizens who notice any illegal activities can call 12328 to report them.

A law enforcement team received a report May 1 which said that construction at the entrance of Longgang School Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University on Ainan Road in Longgang broke a water pipe resulting in water running down the street.

The team visited the site, and they confirmed that the project contractor had a construction permit but did not set up safety fences.

The project contractor was fined 5,000 yuan (US$698) by the authority, according to the report.
