5G goes underground with mining application

The world's deepest underground 5G network has been opened and optimized at Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co in China, Shenzhen Economic Daily reported on Wednesday.

The 534-meter-deep 5G network is supported by Huawei Technologies Co and China Mobile to assist mine monitors underground equipment to maintain safety, keep reliability and improve efficiency.

The 5G technology using in mining can help obtain underground production data and environmental video, realize high-definition video calls between ground and underground, enable faster data transmission and remote intelligent control of underground equipment, said Yu Beijian, vice-general manager of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co.

Intelligent and unmanned is the goal of upgrading and transformation of the coal industry, the newspaper said. The "5G-plus mine" intelligent systems will promote intelligent upgrading in the coal industry.

Huawei and China Mobile have jointly launched 5G application services for the coal industry, including "5G-plus 4K HD video transmission", "5G-plus intelligent coal mining", "5G-plus intelligent tunneling", and "5G-plus intelligent routing inspection".
