Salmon is available for sale in several supermarkets and Japanese restaurants in Shenzhen after the coronavirus was recently detected on a chopping board used by a seller of imported salmon at Beijing’s Xinfadi market, the Daily Sunshine reported.

Online shops have updated food safety notices, stressing that salmon on sale all have quarantine inspection reports.

Sliced salmon and salmon sushi were still on sale in supermarkets including Walmart, Vanguard, Rainbow and Hema Fresh, an online-to-offline Chinese retail supermarket under Alibaba Group, on Saturday.

Staff with Walmart said that they were already taking chilled salmon off the shelves after the outbreak in Beijing.

Vanguard supermarkets also took all salmon products off the shelves and strengthened quarantine inspection on meats such as pork, beef and mutton.

A staffer at a RT-Mart in Longhua District told the Daily Sunshine that their salmon was cut on site, which was safe to eat.

“However, given the concerns of citizens, we will stop the sale,” said the staff member.

Staff with Rainbow supermarket said that they took ready-to-eat salmon off the shelves considering current situations but will keep selling frozen salmon.

Several customers were ordering salmon at Japanese restaurants such as Genki Sushi and Helv during the reporter’s visit Saturday.

Staff with Genki Suchi in Bao’an District said that their store still provided salmon for customers but would inform customers of the origin of the products.

At present, salmon sales continue on online platforms including Meituan, Ele.me, Hema Fresh and JD home delivery.

“Many customers asked about the safety of salmon today. The salmon we sold all have safety certificates,” said the owner of Oujie Norway salmon shop Saturday.
