This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. To mark the occasion, we are publishing a series of reports celebrating the city's achievements in different aspects over the past four decades.

Having achieved remarkable economic growth over the past four decades, Shenzhen is now poised to push for more balanced and coordinated development on its way to become a national model of high-quality development, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

In 1980, the country's first special economic zone (SEZ) was established in Shenzhen. The SEZ used to consist of Futian, Luohu, Nanshan and Yantian districts and was expanded to cover the entire city in 2010.

A balanced development of the whole city remains at the top of Shenzhen’s agenda, as the city is embracing unprecedented opportunities to boost the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and to build a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Longgang District is striving to open up new space for urban development and to become a hub of transportation, industry and innovation in eastern Shenzhen.

Pingshan District, located in the east end of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Macao Science and Technology Innovation Corridor, connects the city with Shenshan Special Cooperation Zone and eastern Guangdong.

In recent years, Pingshan has made full use of its advantages in available space, industrial foundation and ecological environment to build Pingshan High-tech Park of Shenzhen National High-tech Zone with international first-class standards.

Yantian District has transformed from a coastal fishing village to become a modern urban area, while Dapeng New Area has been dedicated to building a new cooperation platform in the eastern part of the Greater Bay Area.

In the past three years, Dapeng has continued to optimize its planning in transportation, education, health care and ecological environment. Meanwhile, it has focused on boosting the development of Baguang International Bio-Valley, a pioneering area for life science and technology.

Bao'an and Nanshan districts, with unique geographic locations, transportation networks and economic strength, have been giving full play to their advantages in supporting the city's Western Development Strategy.

Luohu District is striving to revitalize itself through a number of projects to turn into an area with competitiveness and influence, while Guangming District is accelerating its construction of Guangming Science City to become a key engine for sci-tech innovation in the Greater Bay Area.

Located in the central axis of Shenzhen, Longhua District is of great significance for the city to promote regional coordinated development and to serve as a key link connecting Shenzhen, Dongguan and Hong Kong.

Benchmarking Manhattan and Silicon Valley, Futian District will build an economic system that features finance, technology and culture and takes the form of a CBD and high-tech zone by the end of 2020.
