Forty-seven senior high schools in Shenzhen launched this year’s independent recruitment Sunday to enroll 2,819 junior high school students in total.

For the first time, enrollment was divided into two categories — students with innovative potential in certain subjects and students with talent in sports or arts.

Also for the first time, both private and district-level senior high schools were included in the independent enrollment, said the report.

Schools allowed to recruit innovative potential students this year include: Hongling Middle School in Futian District, Shenzhen Cuiyuan High School in Luohu District, Shenzhen Yucai High School in Nanshan District, Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School, Shenzhen Bao’an Middle School (Group) High School Department, Longhua High School and RDFZ Shenzhen School in Longgang District.

A newly built school, the High School Affiliated to Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), will enroll a total of 50 students through the independent recruitment.

The independent recruitment for innovative potential students included two sets of content for Shenzhen Experimental School (High School Department) this year, namely a knowledge test and a group interview, according to Liu Shengju, the director of the school’s academic affairs.

The knowledge test included exams on subjects including Chinese, Math, English, Physics and Chemistry.

The group interview was designed to test four abilities — innovative spirits, communication and cooperation capability, leadership and language ability.

Each group had six to seven students. Five teachers were in charge of each group interview.

The school has also invited outside experts to join in the review procedure.
