The microelectronic technique subject committee of the Chinese Society for Technical and Vocational Education (CSTVE) was officially established yesterday.

The information was announced at a ceremony held at Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology (SZIIT) in Longgang District.

The initial purpose of the committee is to cultivate high-quality technical talent in the country’s microelectronic technique field, with a mission to enhance the quality of teaching staff in the field and compile qualified teaching materials.

The idea of building a microelectronic technique subject committee was first initiated by Lu Xin, director of CSTVE and former deputy director of the Ministry of Education, during a visit to the microelectronic practicing base of SZIIT in July last year.

Related data suggests that China needs 300,000 technicians in the integrated circuit (IC) industry this year. However, there are only 125,000 IC technicians at present.

China is expected to need 500,000 qualified IC workers by 2030.

China had over 30 million college students last year. However, students studying subjects related to microelectronic techniques were fewer than 10,000, according to information released by CSTVE.

Given the demand and status quo, the committee will not only strengthen the cultivation of talented students and teaching staff in the microelectronic technique field but also compile a series of teaching books on microelectronic technique subjects covering vocational, bachelor’s and master’s degrees and form a cultivation system.

The committee will promote the construction of training bases and to provide trainings for 300,000 students in the microelectronic field across the country in three years.

The committee, with its secretariat set up at SZIIT, is designed as a think tank to also serve the national strategy for the IC industry, Xu Zhiliang, secretary general of the committee, said at the ceremony.

A total of 45 universities and enterprises, including Fudan University and Huada Semiconductor Co. Ltd., have been granted the committee’s memberships.

Chen Qiuming, director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau, attended the ceremony and said that Shenzhen will go on to support the development of the committee.
