Many Shenzhen-based companies said that they have benefited from the city’s full 5G coverage as it helps to update their businesses, according to Shenzhen Special Zone Daily yesterday.

Shenzhen Information Infrastructure Investment and Development Ltd. and Shenzhen Expressway Co. jointly upgraded Guangzhou-Shenzhen Riverside Expressway as the country’s first smart expressway with full 5G coverage.

The whole project, which took only 45 days to complete, used more than 93 multifunctional smart poles and an undisclosed number of 5G base stations to achieve full coverage.

The smart poles are equipped with intelligent road lights and devices to monitor the traffic and weather, which will help maintain roads and improve emergency response.

It is reported that the city will install 24,000 multifunctional smart poles by 2022 and 47,000 by 2025 as a means to support the expansion of 5G and Internet of Things.

With 5G technology, workers at China Southern Power Grid’s Pengcheng Substation in Longhua District no longer need to inspect the equipment personally. Instead, the work can be conducted through a smart system on computers with all necessary information provided.

The efficiency of inspecting electricity network equipment has increased by 270 percent. A procedure to check 1,330 items took three days to finish in the past, now only needs one hour, said the report.

The Mawan smart port, upgraded from a traditional port, successfully developed a smart operation system that can handle 10 million containers at the port, and is said to offer a Chinese model for the smart port industry.

Skyworth has applied 5G technology in building a smart home system. The system, with a 24-inch touch-screen control, is able to handle multiple tasks including controlling home appliances and other tasks involving refrigerators, digital speakers and home entertainment.

Powered by 5G technology, the system can effectively solve the shortcomings seen in current smart home systems such as network and equipment disconnections, according to the report.
