Shenzhen a magnet for talent

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone. To mark the occasion, we are publishing a series of reports celebrating the city's achievements in different aspects over the past four decades.

Talent is the first resource, and the most dynamic element in innovation. Shenzhen Talent Competitiveness Report in 2020 showed Shenzhen introduced 287,500 talented employees in 2019. The number of talents working in the science and technology sector reached 2 million.

The amount of talent in Shenzhen has continued to rise in recent years.

In 2017, Shenzhen introduced 233,662 talented employees, a 256-percent increase year on year. Among them, 101,122 graduates from colleges and universities. In 2017, Shenzhen introduced 958 high-end professionals from overseas and 12 full-time academicians from other mainland cities and accredited 2,954 professionals from overseas.

Shenzhen now is home to 16,000 accredited talented professionals, 140,000 overseas returnees and 46 full-time academicians, according to a report in Shenzhen Economic Daily.

To attract more talent to the city, Shenzhen offers housing incentives for professionals, including living subsidies ranging from 15,000 yuan (US$2,161) to 30,000 yuan for undergraduates and graduate students who have taken up jobs in the city.
