A pair of mules were seen galloping down Beihuan Boulevard on Monday morning, with Shenzhen traffic police “escorting” them from behind while ensuring the safety of drivers on the busy road, Shenzhen Evening News reported yesterday.

According to the video provided by a netizen, who happened to capture video of the scene, the two mules were running on the boulevard in the direction of Luohu District, with traffic police trailing behind.

The video caused quite a stir on the Internet, with some netizens suggesting that Shenzhen drivers are well-mannered, as none of them had honked their horns for fear of startling the mules.

Shenzhen traffic police released a notice through its official Sina Weibo account at 11:37 a.m. that day, saying that at 9:03 a.m., two mules (without reins) were running in the vehicle lanes of the Tanglangshan Tunnel section of Beihuan Boulevard in Nanshan District, heading toward Futian District.

The two mules were found on Nigang Road in Luohu District by local traffic police at 9:23 a.m., and were intercepted at Chunfeng Flyover at about 10 a.m. The police contacted the owner of the mules 30 minutes later.

Information released by traffic police showed that the distance from the location where the mules were lost to Chunfeng Flyover is nearly 26 kilometers and spans three districts.

According to the owner of the mules, surnamed Tian, the two mules were transported from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the city three or four months ago, and were mainly used to transport goods at a construction site.

Tian said he found out that the mules had broken free of the reins and ran away at about 8 or 9 a.m. Monday, and then called the police. Knowing that the mules were running on Beihuan Boulevard, he also took a taxi to look for them.

Though the traffic was not heavily affected, Tian was investigated by the police according to the law. The mules were later taken back to the construction site of Tanglangshan Country Park by truck.
