The city’s urban administration and law enforcement bureau has recently issued new dog management regulations through the latest municipal government gazette, which clearly regulates the registration, daily management, admission and disposal of dogs, sznews.com reported.

The regulations, which will be effective until 2025, have classified dogs according to their types and specified the length of leashes for different types of dogs.

It is stipulated that dog owners should keep the dog on a leash when out for a walk. The length of a leash for super small and small dogs shall not exceed 2 meters, while the length for medium-sized or larger dogs shall not exceed 1.5 meters.

Citizens are encouraged to adopt dogs instead of purchasing, and to participate in lectures about raising dogs.

The regulations have also listed the documents needed by individuals and units for dog registration. Dog owners shall apply for registration if their dogs are 3 months old, and can register in either dog-keeping registration service points or online.

All registered dogs should have microchip implants, according to the rules. Dog owners can visit a veterinary to have the microchip implanted into their dogs, and should do so within 30 days of registration.

Dogs that cannot have the microchip implanted temporarily or permanently due to special circumstances, such as the dog’s age or physical condition, can postpone or forgo the procedure.

Shenzhen has been implanting free microchips in all dogs that have been registered in the city since June. The work is scheduled to be finished by the end of this year.
