Meaning:

“尾款” means “follow-up payment,” and “人” means “people.” Coined by Chinese netizens, this term refers to those who have paid deposits for a merchandise at online shops and have to follow up with their payments afterwards. During the Singles’ Day (Nov. 11) sales promotion this year, many online shops have come up with this presale gimmick, luring shoppers to pay a small amount of deposit in exchange for a guaranteed discount. In the end, some buyers may end up losing their deposits or buying things they don’t actually need.

Example:

A: 你是尾款人吗?

Nǐ shì wěikuǎnrén ma?

Did you pay deposits for things at online shops?

B: 我没买什么东西,因为没有什么特别要买的。

Wǒ méi mǎi shénme dōngxī,yīnwèi méiyǒu shénme tèbié yào mǎi de。

In fact, I didn’t buy anything, because I couldn’t think of what I particularly needed.
