Shenzhen is trying to set examples in building an international-level transportation hub, with the travel time between core cites in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area) expected to be cut to 30 minutes by 2035.

According to a three-stage development plan released by the Shenzhen transport bureau last week, the city will basically form an internationalized, integrated and highly efficient transportation system by 2022. In air transportation, it will connect with world major cities. In rail transportation, its connectivity with major cities in the Greater Bay Area will be enhanced. The city’s Metro network will reach 570 kilometers by the end of 2022.

In 2035, the modern transportation system will be formed. The core cities in the Greater Bay Area will be connected with rail service within a 30-minute trip. In urban transportation, the network will exceed 1,000 kilometers and serve 85 percent of all the riders using public transport.

In the middle of the century, the city will complete a highly efficient, high-quality, low-emission and low-fatality transportation system, becoming a benchmark city in world transportation.

Shenzhen was chosen to be one of 13 areas in the national pilot program to build a country with a strong transportation system this August.

To achieve the goal, Shenzhen will launch the construction of more intercity railways connecting Daya Bay area, Huizhou, Guangzhou and Dongguan in the coming one or two years.

Shenzhen Metro Line 10 will extend to Fenggang in Dongguan, Line 14 to Huiyang in Huizhou, Line 11 to Chang’an in Dongguan and Line 22 to Tangxia in Dongguan. In three to five years, Shenzhen Metro Line 6 spur line linking with Dongguan’s Metro Line 1 will be put into operation. The construction of Xili Comprehensive Transport Hub and Shenzhen Airport East Railway Station will be completed.

The Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport will build more terminals, with around 100 international routes to global innovative cities, hot tourism destinations in the U.S., Europe and Australia and key cities in Belt and Road countries to be launched in the coming three to five years.

China aims to build a comprehensive modern transportation system by 2035 that is safe, convenient, efficient, green and economical, according to a document jointly released by the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council in September last year.
