Meaning:

“战斗” means “fighting,” and “民族” means “nation” or “race.” This term, first used by Japanese cartoonist Akira Toriyama to refer to the Saiyans in his manga “Dragon Ball,” became popular with the manga series. The Saiyans are a fighting race who, since ancient times, have lived a violent and inhumane lifestyle. Chinese netizens use this term jokingly to refer to the Russians, who are stereotyped as drinking a lot of vodka, sometimes eating raw meat, and being easily agitated into a fight over a disagreement.

Example:

A: 听说你弟弟找了个漂亮女朋友。

Tīngshuō nǐ dìdi zhǎo le gè piàoliang nǚpéngyou。

I’ve heard that your younger brother has a pretty girlfriend.

B: 是他在美国留学时认识的,来自战斗民族。

Shì tā zài měiguó liúxué shí rènshí de,láizì zhàndòu mínzú。

He met her while studying in the United States, and she’s Russian.
