Flower shows in Lianhua Hill Park and Donghu Park attracted a large amount of tourists during the past weekend. However, large crowds brought heavy traffic jams surrounding the parks.

The traffic police remind citizens to travel via green methods as no parking spaces are provided in the parks during the exhibitions.

A reporter of Shenzhen Special Zone Daily drove to Donghu Park at 10 a.m. Sunday. The real-time navigation map showed that the roads along the way to the park like Aiguo and Yanhe roads had already been marked in red. The road sections near the front gate of Donghu Park had vehicles waiting in long lines.

“I’ve been stopped for half an hour, it’s just 500 to 600 meters,” a driver surnamed Li complained to the reporter.

Zuo and his family felt lucky for taking a bus to Donghu Park when they saw the heavy traffic jam. “We took the Metro and transferred to a bus. It’s a bit troublesome but much better than joining the great number of cars,” Zuo said with a smile.

The parking lots inside the park will not open to the public during the flower fairs due to the limited parking spaces unable to meet the high number of spaces needed.

The tourist numbers in Donghu Park started to rise from 7:30 a.m. Sunday, and the surrounding roads were busy from 9 a.m.

“The first congestion point is at the front gate of Donghu Park, both ways saw heavy traffic, the congested line ended at Aiguo Road East. The other congestion point is at the side gate on Yanhe Road. Vehicles moved slowly,” Yan Wei, a traffic police officer said.

The traffic police increased patrol and guidance near the park.

Donghu Park reported 51 congestion reports Sunday, up 19.4 percent over a weekend before.

Lianhua Hill Park also saw crowded traffic, and the congestion cases Sunday increased 18.7 percent over the previous weekend. The congested roads are primarily Hongli, Caitian, Xinzhou and Lianhua roads which also impacted the traffic to Shenzhen Children’s Palace and Shenzhen Children’s Hospital.

“The surrounding areas of the two parks will still see a peak in traffic this weekend,” Yue Weikang, a traffic police officer, said.

The bougainvillea show in Lianhua Hill Park will last until Dec. 18, while the chrysanthemum exhibition in Donghu Park will close Dec. 10.

The traffic police suggest citizens take public transport, and try to head to the parks during the weekdays.
