A series of avant-garde building concepts by 150-some international architects are now on exhibition at the Qianhai Kerry Center.

The exhibition is a subvenue of the 8th Shenzhen-Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture (UABB) that kicked off Friday.

Consisting of three major parts of “Back to Future,” “Qianhai Superposition” and “Instant City,” the exhibition features the advanced construction ideas applied in the Qianhai Shenzhen-Hong Kong Modern Service Industry Cooperation Zone, as well as a blueprint of the future urban construction of Qianhai.

At the exhibition, six of the world’s top architectural design companies — Foster + Partners, Field Operations, gmp, MVRDV, OMA and Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners — share with the audience their building concepts in more than 50 projects in Qianhai and the possibilities of a city’s future appearance through six project models.

In the “Qianhai Superposition” section, the designs of the Qianhai International Financial Exchange Center, Qianhai Guiwan Park, Guoshen Museum, Qianhai Urban Parlor, Qianhai Kerry Center and Qianhai Longwan International Talent Apartments are shown to the public for the first time.

According to Feng Guochuan and Cheng Yani, curators of the exhibition, Qianhai reflects the architects’ wishes for the future urban civilization during its construction of a new urban center.

Feng said the exhibition is aimed to provoke thinking among more people on the future of urban development in multiple aspects such as architecture, art, culture and people’s livelihood. “The highlight of this exhibition is ‘superposition cities,’ which means that a city’s appearance and functions can be overlapped by time and space.”

Cheng said they’ve chosen Qianhai to host the exhibition because Qianhai “has adopted an edgy building concept and is home to a number of world-renowned design companies.” The design companies have not only demonstrated practical results in Qianhai, but also brought some major architectural achievements they made elsewhere in the world, Cheng said.

The exhibition is sponsored by the authority of Qianhai Cooperation Zone and is hosted by the Qianhai Kerry Center. It is the first time for the exhibition to be hosted by a Hong Kong-funded enterprise, which reflects the free trade area’s characteristic of Shenzhen-Hong Kong cooperation.

An online reservation is required to view the exhibition. Residents can make a reservation on the public account of “Who When Group” on WeChat. The exhibition is open until Sunday and will run through Feb. 6.
