The air quality in Shenzhen ranked sixth out of 168 key cities in China in the first 11 months, statistics from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment showed recently.

The city’s average PM2.5 concentration, a key indicator of air pollution, stood at 18 micrograms per cubic meter, down 4.8 micrograms per cubic meter compared to the same period last year.

The top five cities are Haikou in Hainan Province, Lhasa in Tibet, Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province, Xiamen in Fujian Province and Huangshan in Anhui Province.

Shenzhen’s air quality index has been listed in the top 10 among 168 monitored cities in China for seven consecutive years, and has met the European Union standards.

Shenzhen has rolled out a series of measures such as Shenzhen Blue Sky Sustainable Development Action Plan, Blue Sky Project and Blue Sky Action Plan since 2004.

It is the first city in the country to control pollution from shipping, analyze origins of the PM2.5 and replace all the old public buses and taxis with electric ones.

Shenzhen is also the only city in the country that has prohibited the burning of high polluting fossil fuels and the bulk use of coal as well as general industrial coal.
