A 24.74-kilometer handmade hiking trail linking Nanshan, Futian and Luohu districts in central Shenzhen welcomed its first batch of nearly 50 visitors Saturday, after the trail was officially completed and opened at the end of December in 2020.

The trail has six entrances, three of them on Meilin Mountain in Futian District — near the litchi orchard, the former border checkpoint station and the graffiti wall, respectively. The other three entrances are located in the Fenggang residential estate and the Shenzhen Hospital of the People’s Armed Police Forces in Luohu District, and the Longzhu gate of Tanglang Mountain in Nanshan District.

Signs displaying plant information and hiking routes as well as distance posts can be found along the trail.

The city’s park management center initiated the hand-built hiking trail project in 2019, which consisted of two phases.

The first phase was mainly conducted on Meilin Mountain, which was completed by the end of November in 2019.

The second phase included work on Tanglang Mountain, Meilin Mountain and Yinhu Mountain in Luohu, which was finished last December.

Without the use of concrete or granite, the hand-built hiking trail can reduce the impact of construction on the environment to the minimum level, said the urban management authority.

A resident who identified himself as Chen attended Saturday’s event to experience the trail, saying that the trail is different from the usual hiking routes, which has not only provided a better hiking experience but also brings people closer to nature.

According to the city’s park management center, a 25-kilometer hand-built hiking trail at Yangtai Mountain bordering Bao’an, Longhua and Nanshan districts and Sanzhoutian in Yantian District will be built this year.
