Two Shenzhen girls, who bowed in respect and appreciation to a driver for his giving way to pedestrians, won praise from the traffic police Monday, Shenzhen Evening News reported.

The two girls are sisters both studying in Huacheng School in Longgang District. The elder sister Huang Huiyue is a fifth grader and the younger one Huang Yuxuan is a second grader, according to Fu Liting, a traffic policewoman.

The sisters, both in school uniforms, intended to cross the road when a driver surnamed Yang was driving through an intersection of Ai’nan Road and Baohe Road in Longgang District. Yang stopped his car allowing two students to pass, and the girls responded with bows. Yang’s dashcam captured the scene. He published the clip on WeChat and it has gone viral on the Internet and received many “likes.”

On Monday, the sisters received gifts from the traffic police who commended their civility at the school’s flag-raising ceremony.

“Dad has educated us that people should respect each other. We should thank the driver who gave way to us,” Huang Huiyue told the reporter with the News.

“After years of management and appeal, it has been a social norm in Shenzhen that drivers yield to pedestrians. At present, the proportion of drivers who give way to pedestrians has been over 90 percent,” Fu said.
