Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) climbs up impressive 16 places to the 14th place at the Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021 released by Times Higher Education (THE) in London on Tuesday, sources from the university said.

Shenzhen University ranks 70th in the ranking, and takes 26th place among the listed Chinese mainland universities.

The Chinese mainland sets a record of taking up as many as 12 places in the top 20. China becomes the first country to secure all the top five places, according to the THE.

Fudan University (4th) and Shanghai Jiaotong University (5th) both climb up to join Tsinghua University (1st), Peking University (2nd) and Zhejiang University (3rd), that remain the same rankings as the previous year, in the top five.

The top 10 also include University of Science and Technology of China (7th) and Nanjing University (9th). Beijing Normal University (17th) and Tongji University (20th) recently joined the top 20.

The ranking uses the same 13 performance indicators as those for the THE World University Rankings to judge institutions on their teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. It is recalibrated to reflect the development priorities of universities in emerging economies.

According to the THE, universities from emerging economies are improving at a much faster rate than those around the rest of the world who are ranked in the THE World University Rankings. China is leading the way in its category.

In total, 91 universities from the Chinese mainland qualify for the THE Emerging Economies University Rankings 2021.

The ranking includes institutions in countries or regions classified by the Financial Times Stock Exchange Group as “advanced emerging,” “secondary emerging” or “frontier.”

A record 606 universities rank this year from 48 countries and regions, 73 more than in 2020.
