Meaning:

A homophone of “九零后” (people born after year 1990), this newly coined term replaces the character “九” (meaning “nine”) with “韭” (meaning “leek,” a vegetable used as a metaphor for money-losing retail investors in the Chinese stock market). Netizens coined this term for those who suffered losses from stock market nosedive after the Spring Festival. Many young people rushed to buy equity funds immediately before the holiday.

Example:

A: 你最近怎么样?

Nǐ zuìjìn zěnmeyàng?

How have you been?

B: 股市跌了不少,我也成了韭零后。

Gǔshì diē le bùshǎo,wǒ yě chéngle jiǔlínghòu。

The stock market plunged, and I suffered losses in my equity fund investments.

A: 你可以试试每个月拿出部分薪水做基金定投。

Nǐ kěyǐ shìshì měigeyuè náchū bùfēn xīnshuǐ zuò jījīn dìngtóu。

You can try the dollar-cost averaging strategy and invest part of your monthly salary in funds.
