Meaning:

“瓜” means “melon,” and “皮” means “rind.” Literally meaning “rind of melons,” this term originates in the dialects of Sichuan, Chongqing and Shaanxi. It’s rather derogative, used to describe someone who is stupid. As many gamers or gaming vloggers are from these regions, the term became widely used in the gaming community, which is another term for “rookie,” or a person unskillful at or new to a game. It’s also interesting to note that in Sichuan Province, people sometimes use the term jokingly to address someone they have close ties with, such as one’s boyfriend.

Example:

A: 今晚我带女朋友一起来打游戏好不好?

Jīnwǎn wǒ dài nǚpéngyou yīqǐ lái dǎyóuxì hǎobuhǎo?

Is it OK if I bring my girlfriend to the game this evening?

B: 还是算了吧,她肯定很瓜皮,而且她也不一定感兴趣啊。

Háishì suàn le ba,tā kěndìng hěn guāpí, érqiě tā yě bù yīdìng gǎnxìngqù a。

You’d better not. She’s most probably a rookie, and could be bored.
